My name is Matthew Shiflet, I’m an alumnus of Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College, and I am passionate about video games and esports.

I graduated from OU in May 2019 with a minor in marketing and a certificate in social media alongside my degree in journalism. During the spring semester of my junior year, I studied on exchange at Hong Kong Baptist University in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. You can read about my adventures in the blog section of my website.

As a senior in the Honors Tutorial College, I wrote a thesis paper titled “Viral Marketing: Concept Explication and Case Studies in the Video Game and Esports Industries.” The thesis explained what viral marketing truly is and show how Overwatch League and Epic Games, through Fortnite, exemplify best practices in viral marketing.

I’ve been reading and writing since I was three years old, and I’ve been gaming for almost as long. In high school, I decided to combine my skills and passion for a career.

On August 19, 2013, as a junior in high school, I started my first blog, My Opinion as a Gamer. I focused on editorial topics but eventually branched into other types of writing as well. The posts from that blog are available at the linked archive.

In mid-January 2014, I was invited to write for Gamers Sphere (now Geekisphere), a larger website consisting of several writers and video producers. I wrote there as a Senior Editor until August 2017. I performed various duties including news reporting, PR, and even some video production. As an interviewer, I talked with a variety of people from companies such as Roll_7 Studios (Not a Hero, OlliOlli) and Housemarque Studios (Outland, RESOGUN). I also stepped into the entertainment industry by interviewing Grammy winner Glen Slater, BattleBots Season 6 runner-up Ray Billings, and The Walking Dead star Chad L. Coleman. While the Gamers Sphere domain is no longer active, you can see some of my posts on the Wayback Machine.

As an underclassman at OU, I worked with Ubisoft’s College Media Program to write video game reviews for our student newspaper, The Post. You can click on this link to see an archive of all my work at The Post.

I currently serve as the PR Manager for GuessworkVR, an indie game development studio focusing on virtual reality. The team is currently developing its first game, UNDR[H2O], and it’s my job to get the word out about the project through our social media pages and website. I began working with the team in April 2016, and as the one-man marketing and PR contact, I will be working to get our game in the public eye when it is ready (hopefully in 2019).

Since early 2018, I have become increasingly interested in esports, particularly the Overwatch League. As a senior, I was a team captain and flex player for an Overwatch team made of OU students that competed in Open Division. I was also the starting off-tank for the team representing my university in Tespa’s national and regional collegiate brackets.

In December 2018, I started a YouTube channel focused on OWL news, opinons, interviews, and more. Since December, I have steadily grown my community and follower engagement across YouTube, Twitter and Discord. I regularly interact with viewers on various platforms and actively utilize their suggestions.

I have extensive knowledge of Overwatch and OWL as a competitive player, viewer and analyst. My combination of game and league knowledge with my writing, editing and on-camera skills make me an ideal candidate for a team or league employee.

I communicate effectively through the written word and have won awards for public speaking. I qualified as a semi-finalist and competed in a national competition in early 2015 and have presented at conventions in front of hundreds.

I am a diligent worker who always meets deadlines and works well under pressure. I embrace responsibility whether in a leadership role or not. I’m friendly and easy-going, but I will apply myself relentlessly to ensure that my job is a job well done. Two of my best traits are my versatility and flexibility to handle the task at hand. I adapt. I’m a quick and eager to learn, and I will work to impress those who expect the best of me.

Some of my other skills include news and press release writing, editing in AP Style, familiarity with developing a PR plan, time management, and the ability to learn new programs and applications quickly.

While studying abroad in Hong Kong, I learned a lot about travel, various cultures, and my own independence. I learned how to solve problems on my own, like replacing a lost passport and navigating foreign cities with no knowledge of the languages.

This is only a small sample of my life so far, but there’s plenty more to learn about me. My resume is located on the resume tab of this site. If you’d like to know more about me, get in touch via any of my contacts below.
