My name is Matthew Shiflet, and I’m a Digital and Social Media Manager for Esports Engine, a production company working with gaming and esports clients across the globe. Prior to Esports Engine, I was the Social Media Coordinator for the Boston Uprising, a professional team in the Overwatch League owned by The Kraft Group. I graduated from Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College in May 2019 with a degree in journalism, a minor in Marketing and a certificate in Social Media.
In my current role at Esports Engine, I provide marketing services to clients. Aside from developing a social media calendar, I execute live coverage for remote and on-site events, create analytics reports, and lead teams to expand coverage into multiple languages. As I immerse myself in a community, I interact with its fans and players, gauge their sentiment, and make adjustments to better serve them while providing increased value to Esports Engine and its clients.
At the Boston Uprising, my role also included PR responsibilities, such as writing press releases, coordinating media requests, leading press conferences, and writing pieces about our team for BostonUprising.com. I worked at the 2019 OWL Grand Finals and multiple live homestand events before the COVID-19 pandemic began. I acted as a bridge between the esports and traditional sports worlds for leadership, conveying the industries’ similarities and differences. Given my knowledge of the NFL, I also had opportunities to help create content for the New England Patriots.
I graduated summa cum laude from Ohio University in May 2019 with a minor in marketing and a certificate in social media alongside my degree in journalism. During the spring semester of my junior year, I studied on exchange at Hong Kong Baptist University.
I focused specifically on esports in my final year at Ohio University. My Honors Tutorial College thesis paper, “Viral Marketing: Concept Explication and Case Studies in the Video Game and Esports Industries,” explained what viral marketing truly is and show how the Overwatch League and Epic Games, through Fortnite, exemplify best practices in viral marketing.
During this time, I was a team captain and player for one of Ohio University’s Overwatch teams. We competed in Open Division and Tespa’s national and regional collegiate brackets. I also started a YouTube channel focused on OWL news, opinions, interviews, and more. I steadily grew my community and follower engagement across YouTube, Twitter and Discord, and the experience helped prepare me for many of my responsibilities with the Boston Uprising.
As an underclassman at Ohio University, I worked with Ubisoft’s College Media Program to write video game reviews for our student newspaper, The Post. I also served as the PR Manager for GuessworkVR, an indie game development studio focusing on virtual reality. From April 2016 to April 2019, I managed the studio’s social media pages and website.
I started my first blog as a junior in high school and focused on editorial topics. In January 2014, I was invited to write for Gamers Sphere. I wrote there as a Senior Editor until August 2017. At Gamers Sphere, I interviewed a variety of people from developers such as Roll_7 Studios (Not a Hero, OlliOlli) and Housemarque Studios (Outland, RESOGUN). I also stepped into the entertainment industry by interviewing Grammy winner Glen Slater, BattleBots Season 6 runner-up Ray Billings, and The Walking Dead star Chad L. Coleman.
I communicate effectively through the written word and have won awards for public speaking. I qualified as a semi-finalist and competed in a national competition in early 2015 and have presented at conventions in front of hundreds.
I am a diligent worker who always meets deadlines and works well under pressure. I embrace responsibility whether in a leadership role or not. I’m friendly and easy-going, but I will apply myself relentlessly to ensure that my job is a job well done. Two of my best traits are my preparedness and flexibility to handle the task at hand. I adapt. I’m quick and eager to learn, and I will work to impress those who expect the best of me.
