My name is Matthew Shiflet, I’m a student at Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College, and I am passionate about video games.

I’m part of OU’s class of 2019, and I will graduate with a minor in marketing and a certificate in social media alongside my bachelor’s in journalism. During the spring semester of my junior year, I studied on exchange at Hong Kong Baptist University in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. You can read about my adventures in the blog section of my website.

I’ve been reading and writing since I was three years old, and I’ve been gaming for almost as long. In high school, I decided to smash the two together for a viable career path.

On August 19, 2013, when I was a junior in high school, I started my first blog, My Opinion as a Gamer, or MOAAG for short. I focused on editorial topics but eventually branched into other types of writing as well. The posts from that blog are available at the linked archive.

In mid-January 2014, I was invited to write for Gamers Sphere, a larger website consisting of several writers and video producers. I wrote there as a Senior Editor until August 2017. I performed various duties from reporting to PR, and I previously recorded and edited narrated gameplay videos.

At Gamers Sphere, I’ve interviewed a variety of people from developing companies such as Roll_7 Studios (Not a Hero, OlliOlli) and Housemarque Studios (Outland, RESOGUN). I’ve stepped into the entertainment industry with interviews with GRAMMY winner Glen Slater, BattleBots Season 6 runner-up Ray Billings, and The Walking Dead star Chad L. Coleman.

During my first semester of college, I was a culture reporter for The Post, a student newspaper at Ohio University. I also wrote occasional video game reviews for the publication through my sophomore year. You can click on this link to see an archive of all my work at The Post.

I currently serve as the PR Manager for GuessworkVR, an indie game development studio focusing on virtual reality. The team is currently developing its first game, UNDR[H2O], and it’s my job to get the word out about the project through our social media pages and website. I began working with the team in April 2016, but my role is minimal until the game is closer to release. I plan on creating a larger media blitz when the time is right. As the one-man marketing and PR contact, I will be working to get our game in the public eye when it is ready.

I communicate effectively through the written word and have won awards for public speaking. I qualified as a semi-finalist and competed in a national competition in early 2015 and have presented at conventions in front of hundreds.

I am a diligent worker who always meets deadlines and works well under pressure. I embrace responsibility whether in a leadership role or not. I’m friendly and easy-going, but I will apply myself relentlessly to ensure that my job is a job well done. Two of my best traits are my versatility and flexibility to handle the task at hand. I adapt. I’m a quick learner and eager to impress those who expect the best of me.

Some of my other skills include news and press release writing, editing, familiarity with developing a PR plan, time management, and the ability to learn new programs and applications quickly.

While studying abroad in Hong Kong, I learned a lot about travel, various cultures, and my own independence. I learned how to solve problems on my own, like replacing a lost passport and navigating foreign cities with no knowledge of the languages.

This is only a small sample of my life so far, but there’s plenty more to learn about me. My resume is located on the resume tab of this site. If you’d like to know more about me, get in touch via any of my contacts below.
